Round 14 – we celebrate Umpiring Legend Steve Clark officiate his 1,000th match.
Steven Clark – 1000 Spencer Gulf Football League Games
Known to almost everyone simply as “Clarky”, Steven Clark has been a familiar face around football grounds for more than half a century.
His football journey began in 1966 with the Cleve Football Club, where he first developed his love of the game.
Steve’s umpiring career began in the Whyalla Football League during the mid-1980s, where he officiated in all forms of umpiring before stepping away to coach the Wirrulla Football Club.
In 1995, Steve commenced what would become an extraordinary association with the Spencer Gulf Football League, and this weekend reaches the incredible milestone of 1,000 Spencer Gulf Football League games.
Throughout his distinguished career, Steve has officiated in League Grand Finals as both a field umpire and goal umpire, while also proudly representing the League on numerous occasions at the SANFL State Country Championships in both disciplines.
His contribution to umpiring extends well beyond match day.
Steve has served as Chairperson, Committee Member, Coach and Selector of the Port Pirie Football League Umpires Association and has been instrumental in developing and mentoring countless young umpires. His willingness to support, encourage and guide new officials has helped shape umpiring within the Spencer Gulf Football League for many years.
His list of honours is extensive and reflects the respect he has earned throughout the football community. Steve has received numerous Best Field and Goal Umpire awards, along with many other honours recognising his outstanding service and dedication to the game.
Among his many achievements are the Peter “Skate” Connor Memorial Trophy, the PPFLUA SANFL Merit Award, Life Membership of both the Port Pirie Football League Umpires Association, the Port Pirie Football League and the Spencer Gulf Football League, culminating in receiving the SANFL Service to Umpiring Award in 2023.
While Steve’s achievements and accolades speak for themselves, those fortunate enough to have umpired alongside him know that his greatest contribution has been the guidance, friendship and encouragement he has provided to generations of umpires.
Armed with his trademark dry sense of humour, quick wit and a lifetime of experience, Clarky is always willing to offer advice, support—or the occasional opinion—to those following in his footsteps.
Reaching 1,000 Spencer Gulf Football League games is a remarkable achievement that very few officials will ever accomplish. It is a testament to Steve’s passion, commitment, professionalism and unwavering dedication to Australian Rules Football and to the Spencer Gulf Football League.

Umpire Abuse Must Stop
Umpires are essential to our game, yet too often they are subjected to unnecessary criticism, questioning, and abuse. This behaviour is unacceptable — and it’s driving good people away from officiating. If this continues, we risk losing the very individuals who make our sport possible. We are calling on all players to show respect for umpiring decisions, and on teammates to take responsibility for one another. Step in when lines are crossed. Hold each other accountable. Support the officials who give their time and effort so we can all play.
Respect for umpires is not optional — it’s fundamental to the integrity and future of our game. Let’s work together to protect them.
