Round 14 SGL Wrap
Round 14 of the SGL was played in wet and wintry conditions, making for a tough day of football across the competition.
South Augusta were too strong for West Augusta, running out 6-14 to 3-11 winners. Trent Ritter led the way with two goals, while Jamel McKenzie was West’s standout performer. Joe Beatty was best afield for South in the difficult conditions.
Solomontown proved far too strong for Central Augusta, recording a convincing 13-17 to 5-6 victory. Jamie Kovacic was the star, booting five goals and earning best-player honours, while Timmy Summer added three. Central had a number of single goal scorers, with Brandon Jackson-Martin again among their better players.
In the final game, Port dominated Lions, winning 13-12 to 2-9 in another cold and wet contest. Thomas Faulkner was outstanding for Port, kicking three goals and being named best on ground, with Lawson Collins also impressing. Tyler Eckert and Luke Patterson were among the better performers for Lions.
Round 15 Preview
Round 15 sees the Lions travel to ETSA Oval to take on Central Augusta in what promises to be a tight and hard-fought contest.
With Central Augusta sitting at the bottom of the ladder and the Lions just above them, there is plenty on the line. The loser of this clash will remain at the foot of the ladder, while a win for either side could potentially keep their finals hopes alive. Central Augusta’s midfield and overall strength around the ground has been impressive, and at the moment they appear to have the edge over the Lions. Lions have struggled in recent weeks and have also lost a number of players from their line-up, which could make the task even tougher. While anything can happen on game day, Central Augusta looks to have the advantage heading into this important Round.
Port travel to Central Oval this weekend to take on West Augusta in what shapes as another important Round 15 clash.
Port come into the game full of confidence after a big win over the Lions, while West Augusta will be looking to bounce back after going down to South Augusta in the wet conditions last weekend. Port could be strengthened even further with the possible return of Blake Hanlon and Darcy Puddy adding quality players to an already strong line up. With players such as Hanlon, Faulkner, Collins brothers and Ebert, Port appear to have plenty of firepower across the ground. West Augusta will need big performances from The Rock Colson, Peter Jackson and Jamahl McKenzie if they are to contain a Port side that looks to have the advantage across most areas of the ground. While West will certainly give it their best, Port look too strong on paper and should take this one out comfortably.
South Augusta Travel to Pirie for Another Big SGL Clash
And yet another quality game awaits in the SGL this weekend, with South Augusta travelling to Pirie to take on the Cats in what promises to be an entertaining contest.
The Cats come into the game full of confidence after a big win over Central Augusta last weekend, while South Augusta also enters the clash on the back of a victory over West Augusta. While South’s win wasn’t necessarily their most convincing performance, as the saying goes, a win is a win, and South will take plenty of confidence from getting the two points. The Cats look particularly strong at the moment, with the return of Mason Munzberg adding another important piece to their side. Munzberg’s form over the past three matches has been impressive, and his return gives the Cats another dangerous option around the ground. Corey Davey continues to show why he is highly rated, with the experienced star seemingly getting better with every game. His ability to influence a contest, along with the work of Tyson Weber, Renfrey, Thomson and Kovacic, gives the Cats plenty of experience and class across the ground. South Augusta certainly won’t be without their chances, however. South have plenty of quality players capable of causing problems for the Cats, with Paparella, Beattie, Houston and the two Ritter brothers just some of the names who will need to have an impact if South is to challenge the Cats. South have enough talent to make this an interesting contest, but at home and with their recent form, Cats look to have the stronger overall side.
