Umpire Abuse Must Stop
Umpires are essential to our game, yet too often they are subjected to unnecessary criticism, questioning, and abuse. This behaviour is unacceptable — and it’s driving good people away from officiating.
If this continues, we risk losing the very individuals who make our sport possible.
We are calling on all players to show respect for umpiring decisions, and on teammates to take responsibility for one another. Step in when lines are crossed. Hold each other accountable. Support the officials who give their time and effort so we can all play.
Respect for umpires is not optional — it’s fundamental to the integrity and future of our game.
Let’s work together to protect them.

Round 9
Port v Lions at Port Oval
Port enters this clash following a loss to the reigning premiers and now faces an improving Lions outfit that powered away from West with a dominant second-half performance. The Doggies have been well served by the consistent form of Ebert, Collins and Faulkner, but they’ll need greater support across the ground if they’re to overcome a young Lions side capable of producing some impressive football, despite fluctuating form throughout the season. With key forward Wallace side-lined in the short term, Trav Ley has stepped up admirably to provide a strong target inside 50. Eckert and Edwards have been influential across half-back, while the Promnitz brothers continue to show great form. Patterson, Etto and the ever-reliable Oliphant have also been important contributors in recent weeks. For Port, Hanlon, Ebert, McNamara and Faulkner are expected to lead the charge on their home deck. While the Lions have shown significant improvement, Port’s experience and home-ground advantage should prove decisive.
Port by 10 points.
South vs West at Central Oval
This should be a beauty.
South comes into the match following a hard-fought win over cellar dwellers Central, who pushed them all the way for much of the contest. Meanwhile, West will be ruing a missed opportunity after dominating large portions of their clash with the Lions before fading late and surrendering the game. South’s position equal second on the ladder is no accident. Their form has been outstanding and they continue to find contributors all over the ground. On paper, the combination of the Ritter brothers, Paparella, Beattie, Houston and Gade gives them plenty of firepower and experience. West certainly has the talent to challenge. Lebois, Jackson, Harrison, Bejah, the Warren brothers and McKenzie are all capable of turning a game, and if they can click as a unit, South will have a genuine fight on their hands. West showed enough against the Lions to suggest they’ll be competitive, but South’s consistency, depth and current form make them deserved favourites.
South by 15 points.
Solomontown vs Central at Memorial Oval
The Cats returned to the top of the ladder with an impressive victory over Port, while Centrals narrowly fell short in a spirited contest against South. The Cats are firing on all cylinders at the moment, and their performance at Port Oval showed exactly why they sit atop the standings. Their ball movement, pressure and ability to find contributors across the ground have made them one of the competition’s benchmark sides. However, Centrals won’t make life easy. With players such as McKenna, Williams, Stuart and McKeough leading the way, along with contributions from Jackson-Martin and potentially Newchurch, they have enough talent to challenge any side on their day. Both teams are stacked with quality players, and a close contest is expected for much of the afternoon. For the Cats, they’ll need to continue the strong form that has carried them to the top of the ladder. Webber, Head, Knibbs, Williams, Kovacic and the damaging CD7 will all be expected to play key roles. Centrals have shown they can match it with the competition’s best, but the Cats’ current form, depth and confidence should see them prevail.
